Gorilla Habituation Experience is when tourists visit gorillas and spend more hours with them in the wild. In Uganda, the habituation experience is done in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for whoever is interested in it. This habituation experience started on 1st January 2014. One has got to pay USD 1500 to be able to enjoy the habituation experience. Visitors are allowed to spend four hours with the gorillas. Not all gorilla families in Bwindi are open to habituation, the Uganda Wildlife Authority assigned two gorilla groups for this experience in the area of Rushaga in the southern side Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
While on gorilla habituation experience, clients will have more hours with the mountain gorillas as opposed to the common gorilla trekking that only limited to one hour. In most cases, the ordinary gorilla tracking may last for over 8 hours as trekkers walk to and from the forests in search of the primates, but the specific time allowed to them is 1 hours only. But for the Gorilla habituation experience, visitors usually comprised of mainly researchers and educationists spend more time usually four hours as they observe how gorillas are familiarized.
The only dissimilarity is that those visiting gorillas under the habituation experience may expect to come upon semi adapted mountain gorillas that could hide or behave in an unusual manner even though this is a rare occurrence. To set gorillas for Habituation experience, it may take roughly between 2 to 3 years for total completion. During this period, researchers frequently visit and identify gorilla group on a daily basis. They tend to learn comprehensively about individual gorillas as well as their behaviors. As time elapses, the apes get used the researchers who in the process give each individual gorilla a name. When the researchers are very sure that the gorillas are good for trekking, they introduce to them a mock exercise where people like scientists, journalists or any other category start paying visits to them. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has got over 17 habituated gorilla groups that include Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura in Buhoma found in the North of the park. There is Bitukura, Oruzogo and Kyaguriro in the Eastern side of the impenetrable forest plus Ruhija, Busingye, Nshonji, Mishaya, Kahungye, Bweza in Rushaga as well as Nkuringo Gorilla Group in the southern section of the park.
For Habituation purpose, two gorilla families in Nkuringo and Rushaga have been set aside for the activities. Therefore, in the whole of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, gorilla habituation experience is only done in the southern section of the park.
